There is a common misconception that Offices and General Retail Premises are low risk, so Health & Safety takes a lower priority.
Musculoskeletal injuries are now the biggest single cause of ill health in the workplace (HSC Health and Safety Statistics 2006/07) approx 54% of all reported ill health.
Main causes for musculoskeletal injuries are using computers (DSE) and Manual Handling.
Other issues in Offices and Retail premises include slips, trips and falls, when staff trip on trailing leads, uneven floors, or slip on wet surfaces, falls when trying to reach items at height.
Machinery and equipment in Offices, guillotines, shredders, photocopiers etc can cause injury through missing guards, burns, exposure to chemicals, damaged or overloaded filing cabinets, and in Retail Premises, compactors, shopping trolleys etc.
Storage of equipment and materials in Offices and Retail premises, can lead to injuries through climbing, stretching, objects falling etc.
Violence is also an area affecting staff in both Office and Retail premises, in theft or robbery of cash or equipment.
